Unusable bathroom three days after move-in — and management told me to absorb the cost
I moved into Presidential Towers on 9/15. By 9/17, my bathroom was unusable: the sink and shower produce only scalding hot water. I can't bathe or wash in my own apartment.
What was worse than the plumbing was how management handled it. When I went to the resident services office to ask for help, the manager on duty declined to speak with me and had the receptionist tell me the only thing I could do was wait, at my own cost. When I asked a leasing specialist about my rights if the apartment isn't livable, I was told he wasn't aware of any such policy. That's not accurate — Chicago's tenant ordinance treats plumbing and hot water as essential services, and the summary of those rights is attached to the lease Waterton itself gives you.
Maintenance has come twice. The first repair failed the next day. The second lasted about six hours. I've since been told the cause may require inspecting the plumbing floor by floor through the building. No completion date has been given.
To be fair, a technician did come quickly once I put everything in writing. But residents shouldn't have to cite the city code to get a straight answer, and they shouldn't be told to absorb the cost of an apartment they can't use.
If you're considering renting here: document everything in writing from day one, and know your rights under the Chicago RLTO before you sign.
